1870-CC Liberty Double Eagle

Representing another important rarity of the series, the 1870-CC Liberty Double Eagle was also the first year of issue from the Carson City Mint. The scant production of 3,789 coins were used heavily for commerce within the surrounding territory.

An estimated 40 to 45 coins are believed to survive across all grade levels. All examples currently known have been circulated, with just three to four pieces in About Uncirculated grades. An example graded AU50 by NGC sold for $359,000 at auction in August 2006.

Most 1870-CC Double Eagles will show heavy signs of circulation and grade no finer than Very Fine. Additionally, quality was lacking during the first years of production at the Carson City Mint, and all examples will come weakly struck. This issue represents a prime rarity among the Liberty Double Eagles and attracts much attention when offered at public auction.
