The United States branch mint located in Carson City, Nevada began operations in 1870, striking denominations in both silver and gold. Among the numerous rarities created by the historic mint in its first year of operations was the 1870-CC Liberty Double Eagle (Buy on eBay). This issue had a mintage of 3,789 coins, which circulated heavily within surrounding era.
The 1870-CC Double Eagle has an estimated 40 to 45 survivors across all grade levels. Most show signs of heavy circulation and grade from Very Fine to Extra Fine. A handful of pieces are known in About Uncirculated grades and none are known in mint state. The auction record is held by an example graded PCGS AU-53, which sold for $1,620,000 in 2021.
